Reflexology Support For Fertility Issues

Reflexology can be a great support if you’re having fertility issues and can be undertaken during medical investigations in most cases.

Having a course of gentle, soothing reflexology sessions, together with any recommended dietary and lifestyle changes will support you through a very challenging time.

Reflexology will help you to cope with the stress and frustrations that a fertility problem can create. Relationships can be challenged by infertility so patience, determination and understanding are all required to get through the emotional rollercoaster of highs and lows. You may also be experiencing stress caused by other factors such as long working hours, other children and family members. The relaxing, balancing and calming nature of reflexology at this time may help to improve your mood and put your body in a better state to conceive.  It is also recommended that your partner follows any dietary and lifestyle changes, together with regular reflexology sessions, to optimise your chances of conceiving.

There are many factors which are known to affect fertility in both males and females. Your G.P. should discuss any general health issues, medication, lifestyle factors and dietary advice as well as arranging medical tests to diagnose your fertility problems. The following are some well known causes of fertility problems that can be addressed whilst having reflexology. Your general health will also improve whilst tackling these issues.

  • Smoking - give up completely
  • Alcohol – drinking regularly can reduce fertility by half. Just 5 units per week can stop pregnancy.
  • Caffeine – Research here is mixed. NICE guidelines advise low to moderate consumption is ok but some fertility experts advise that caffeine should be avoided as it can constrict blood vessels and may slow blood flow to the uterus, thus making it potentially harder for an egg to implant.
  • Over or under exercise.
  • An unbalanced diet with too many convenience foods.
  • Additives, preservatives and chemicals such as artificial sweeteners - Opinion here again is mixed. Sweeteners such as aspartame have been deemed safe but there has been a lot of controversy about it’s toxicity. The best advice is to eat a diet that is as natural and unprocessed as possible.
  • Stress
  • Obesity
  • Being underweight
  • Recreational drugs

It is important to take all these factors into consideration when having reflexology as a support for fertility issues. Reflexologists treat the body holistically and the aim is to assist the body to regain its’ balance naturally.

When considering having reflexology as a support for fertility issues it is advisable to have weekly or fortnightly sessions at different times during your menstrual cycle. A full therapy plan will be discussed when you have your first consultation.

If you are having fertility issues there can be many reasons for this. You and your partner must seek a full medical diagnosis prior to having reflexology. Reflexology works well alongside mainstream allopathic care and must not be used as an alternative.

Reflexology and Fertility Treatment (Clomid, ICSI, IUI or IVF )

Reflexology may be a great boost during the pre-conceptual stage. If you have decided to commence treatment with the drug Clomid which stimulates ovulation or you undergo assisted fertility treatments such as IVF, ICSI or IUI then reflexology can still be of great support before your treatment begins. Reflexology can help you cope with the stress and emotions that will inevitably be running high at this time and will help to calm and relax you prior to your treatment. It is also beneficial to continue with reflexology during your medical treatment as the calming and relaxing effects can be of great support during a very stressful and difficult time. The effects of any drug treatment are not affected by a client receiving reflexology.
